Muscle Pain Treatment Gramercy Park NY

Treatment for muscle pain is available from the experienced medical professionals at MedRite Urgent Care. We have several conveniently located offices in New York City, including one near Gramercy Park. At each location, we serve as a convenient and affordable alternative to expensive hospital emergency rooms and busy primary care physicians’ offices for patients who need prompt medical attention for non-life-threatening conditions.

Muscle pain treatment may be required if a muscle becomes pulled, strained, or torn after it is stretched beyond its limits or forced to contract too strongly. This can occur during a vigorous workout or a bout of heavy lifting, as well as something as simple as stepping unsteadily off a sidewalk curb. The resulting damage to muscle fibers and blood vessels can lead to tenderness, inflammation, bruising, and weakening. In mild to moderate cases, only a few muscle fibers are damaged, with the majority of the muscle remaining healthy and intact. In very severe cases, the muscle may sustain significant damage that completely prohibits its use, and may require casting or surgery to heal properly.

In general, for mild-to-moderate injuries, muscle pain treatment usually begins with R-I-C-E, which consists of:

  • Rest – While it is important to maintain some level of physical activity, any positions and movements that cause muscle pain should be temporarily avoided. Crutches can be helpful to patients who have strained leg muscles.
  • Ice – An ice pack, frozen gel pack, or a frozen bag of vegetables can be wrapped in a cloth and applied to a painful area every three to four hours for up to 20 minutes at a time to help lower inflammation.
  • Compression – An elastic bandage wrapped tightly around a strained muscle can help reduce swelling.
  • Elevation – When sitting or lying down, it can be helpful to raise the injured muscle above heart level.

If necessary, muscle pain treatment may include a course of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) taken as needed to alleviate pain for up to 10 days. The team at MedRite can also develop a personalized exercise program to help a patient recover (we are the only urgent care center in Manhattan that offers an in-house physical therapy program).
