Medical clearance made simple.

Preoperative Exams

Getting ready for surgery starts with making sure your body is prepared. At +MEDRITE, we offer fast and thorough preop exam services to help you move forward with confidence.

What is a Preop Exam?

confirm that a patient is healthy enough to safely undergo anesthesia and the planned procedure, also known as medical clearance. This exam helps identify potential complications, reviews any current health issues, and ensures the surgical team has the information needed to reduce increased risk during and after the operation. During a preoperative exam, a healthcare provider will review your medical history, perform a physical exam, and may order lab work, an EKG, or imaging tests. These evaluations are especially important for adults with ongoing medical conditions or for surgical patients undergoing elective surgery. Whether your procedure is minor or complex, a proper preoperative assessment plays a key role in protecting your health. Our providers coordinate with your surgical team to ensure every required test and form is completed on time.

The Process

What to Expect During a Preop Exam

When you visit +MEDRITE for a preoperative evaluation, you’ll follow a clear, step-by-step process. Our goal is to make your visit as smooth and efficient as possible. Here’s what typically happens during your exam:

  1. A provider will begin by reviewing your medical history, past medical history, and family history
  2. A full physical examination will be completed to check overall health
  3. You may undergo lab work including blood tests, blood count, and urine tests
  4. If indicated, an EKG or cardiac evaluation will be performed
  5. Imaging such as a chest X-ray may be ordered, especially for higher-risk patients or those preparing for neck surgery or major elective surgery
  6. We’ll also review any over-the-counter medications you’re taking, as well as any chronic conditions such as high blood pressure
  7. Once complete, your documentation will be prepared and sent to your surgical team

Our providers apply best practices in general internal medicine to evaluate your readiness and ensure nothing is overlooked. Your safety is our priority.

A Quick Q&A

FAQs

Do I need to fast before my preop labs?

It depends on the specific tests your surgeon or provider has requested. Some blood work, such as glucose or cholesterol panels, may require fasting. Our team will let you know ahead of time if fasting is necessary.

How soon before my surgery should I schedule a preop evaluation?

Most preop exams should be completed within 7 to 30 days before your surgery date, depending on your surgical center’s requirements. Scheduling your preop exam a week or two in advance ensures you have time to complete follow-up testing if needed.

Does insurance cover preoperative exams?

Preoperative exams are often covered by insurance when required by a physician or surgeon. Coverage can vary, so we recommend checking with your insurance provider or asking our staff when you arrive.
