Well-Woman Checkup
What to Expect at a Women’s Wellness Exam
At your visit, your provider will focus on your current overall health, any concerns you may have, and preventive care tailored to your age and lifestyle. A women’s wellness exam often includes several important components:
- A review of your medical history, including lifestyle habits, family history, and any ongoing conditions
- A check of vital signs, such as weight and blood pressure
- A breast exam to screen for any changes or irregularities or signs of breast cancer
- A pelvic exam and, when needed, a Pap smear for cervical cancer screening and an overall reproductive health check
- Sexually-transmitted diseases (STD) testing, depending on your age, risk factors, or symptoms
- A review of your menstrual cycle and contraception options
- Guidance on birth control or family planning
- Vaccinations, such as a flu shot or HPV vaccine, if due
Each exam is based on your unique health history and needs. Not all services are required at every visit. Your provider will help determine which screenings are appropriate.
How To Prepare
Preparing for your well-woman exam helps ensure you get the most out of your visit. Here’s what to keep in mind:
- Bring a valid photo ID and your insurance card, if you have one
- Know the date of your last period, especially if you’re due for a Pap smear
- Be ready to discuss your menstrual cycle, sexual history, and any current medications
- Write down any questions or concerns you want to bring up with the provider
- If you’re due for a pelvic exam or Pap smear, try to come at a time when you’re not menstruating
The goal of this visit is to support your total health. Whether you have specific topics to discuss or just need your yearly physical exam, our team is here to guide you through the process with care and discretion.

What should I not do before a well-woman exam?
