During a physical exam for work, a licensed provider will assess whether the individual is physically and mentally prepared to perform the duties required by the role.
The process begins with a medical history review, where the provider will ask about current health conditions, past surgeries, family history, and any current medications.
Next, vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate (pulse), and weight are measured. If needed for the job, vision and hearing screenings may be conducted. These tests can detect if the individual uses hearing aids or glasses and how these impact their ability to perform essential tasks.
Some positions also require some physical ability, mobility, and coordination checks. These human performance evaluations help determine if the person can safely lift, carry, bend, or stand for extended periods.
