Physical for Work

+MEDRITE Urgent Care offers fast, walk-in exams designed to meet employment and safety requirements—no appointment necessary.

What is a Pre-Employment Physical Exam?

A physical for work, also known as a pre-employment physical exam, helps determine if an individual is fit to meet the physical and mental demands of a specific job. Employers often request these exams to ensure that new hires and returning employees are healthy enough to perform their job duties safely and effectively. There are several types of work-related physical exams. These include pre-employment screenings, return-to-work clearances, and fitness-for-duty evaluations. Some employers may also require a DOT physical exam, especially for positions involving commercial driving. Work physicals are guided by state and federal regulations, including those set by OSHA and the FMCSA. These exams may also be used to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), helping employers make appropriate accommodations when needed.

What Happens at a Work Physical Examination?

Physical Exams

During a physical exam for work, a licensed provider will assess whether the individual is physically and mentally prepared to perform the duties required by the role.

The process begins with a medical history review, where the provider will ask about current health conditions, past surgeries, family history, and any current medications.

Next, vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate (pulse), and weight are measured. If needed for the job, vision and hearing screenings may be conducted. These tests can detect if the individual uses hearing aids or glasses and how these impact their ability to perform essential tasks.

Some positions also require some physical ability, mobility, and coordination checks. These human performance evaluations help determine if the person can safely lift, carry, bend, or stand for extended periods. For roles that involve higher physical risk, drug tests, lab work, or other specific tests may be included at the employer’s request.

These screenings are confidential and streamlined, often completed within 30 minutes. Results and documentation are usually available the same day.

If you’re suffering from any life-threatening conditions such as a heart attack, stroke, head injury, severe bleeding or trauma CALL 911 immediately.

Occupational Physicals

Who Needs a Work Physical?

Work physicals are a key part of maintaining safe and healthy workplaces. They help confirm whether a person is medically suited for a specific role and can reduce risk for both the individual and their employer. These exams are often required for:

  • New hires entering physically demanding roles, including construction, warehouse operations, or manufacturing
  • Employees in safety-sensitive jobs such as transportation, law enforcement, or emergency services
  • Individuals returning to work after a leave related to injury or illness
  • Those working in healthcare or with vulnerable populations
  • Employers in regulated industries who must comply with routine screening requirements for insurance, safety, or legal purposes

Whether you’re starting a new job or managing your team’s health compliance as an employer, +MEDRITE makes the process simple and efficient.

What to Bring

How to Prepare for a Walk-In Pre-Employment Medical Exam

To get the most out of your visit, come prepared with the right documents and information. Bring:

  • A valid government-issued photo ID
  • A list of current medications
  • Any required physical forms provided by your employer
  • Records of medical conditions, past surgeries, or previous injuries

It’s also helpful to know your family medical history in case questions arise. If your role requires specific tests, bring related paperwork so our team can ensure the right evaluation is completed.

Getting a good night’s sleep before your appointment is recommended. Being well-rested may help produce more accurate vital sign readings, especially for heart rate and blood pressure.
